What is a printer?

A mechanical/electrical device that prints text or pictures/graphics to paper or other media. There are several different types of Printers:

Daisy Wheel: not used much anymore but uses a wheel or with stamps of each character on it. The hammer presses on the character to imprint through the ribbon to get it on the paper. The print is very clear but they are slow and are limited to the characters on the wheel.
Dot Matrix: creates the characters or graphics by striking the pins in the required pattern. The most commonly are either a line of 9 pins or 2 lines of 12 pins. These printers are usually fast and can print through multiple copies of paper. They are still widely used in business today.
Line Printer: These either use a single printhead, multiple printheads, or a band to print extremely fast. Some of the faster line printers can print as much as 1200 lines in 1 minute. The print isn't usually very good quality when compared to regular dot matrix printers.
Ink Jet: Sprays ink on a sheet of paper. Inkjet technology continues to progress and the resolutions have become extremely high and the speeds are much better than they used to be.
Thermal Printer: Uses heat to imprint the images/text on heat sensitive paper. They are commonly used on cash registers because they are so fast. Fax machines used to print on this paper with but this technology was taken over by inkjet and laser after the 90's. Many times the paper can fade with heat and time.
Laser: Spreads toner on a sheet of paper and basically bakes it on. They are very fast and the quality is generally very good. This uses similar technology to a copier.
LED Printer: Okidata pioneered this technology. It uses a LED strip rather than a laser to project the image on the paper. Generally these are much cooler running the older laser printers.
